Annual militia returns, 1875-1912.

This series consists of oversized returns that provide information on the composition of the State Militia, including the Florida State Troops and the Florida National Guard from 1875 to 1912. The format of the returns varies slightly by year, but generally includes a listing to the state's general and staff officers, along with a statistical summary of the units in the militia and their strength. Correspondence and related materials are included with some of the returns. The series does not contain records for every year.

The Florida National Guard was established in 1909 (Ch. 5930, Laws) replacing the Florida State Troops. From 1921 until 1973, the Guard was placed under the Military Dept (Ch. 8502, Laws). In 1973, the Military Dept. became the Dept. of Military Affairs (Ch. 73-93, Laws). The Adjutant General has served as the military head of the Guard since its inception.
